31 days. 10 events. 6 finalists. One no holds barred, winner takes all face off. Folks, what a month we had with Empower’s 2010 Decathlon Challenge! Personal records were shattered. Top scores went down every day as clients checked the board and were determined to do more reps, go a little faster, and hold that slosh pipe a little longer. At the end of the month, we had 3 finalists from both the men and women. Our top 3 male finishers were George Livanos, John Burkert, and Jimbo Huckabee. The race between these three spartan warriors was literally as close as it could be, as one point separated one man from the next. In the women’s bracket, the top 3 contenders were Mary Sampson, Ann Skye, and Jami Norris.
The Decathlon Challenge Face Off event was held on Saturday, November 14th, at 1 pm here at the studio. Finalists were required to complete 5 of this years 10 events, all back to back. The chosen events were the 90 second push-up test, the prone plank, the medicine ball agility carry, the farmer’s walk, and the 1000 meter row. Due to a few last minute cancellations, George was the only finalist participating in the men’s group. As the top male qualifier though, he certainly earned his place at the top. The women’s challenge was a different story, as Mary Sampson and Ann Skye found themselves tied for the lead after the fifth event. In an edge of your seat finale, both ladies attempted to break the tie by completing the slosh pipe hold one more time. In the end, Ann held on to the pipe for over 4 minutes and it was just enough to top Mary for this year’s title.
Here’s to all of this year’s decathletes! We thank all of you for your participation and applaud your determination in this year’s challenge. You all certainly made it a great success. We can’t wait for next year. Better start training!
