EMPOWER Durham: Trainer Spotlight – Greg Maness

Greg ManessGreg was born in Detroit, Michigan, but spent most of his childhood on the North Carolina coast in the Wilmington area. He played a variety of sports growing up. As a “beach kid” Greg particularly enjoyed bodyboarding and swimming in the ocean. While initially a pre-pharmacy student in college, he eventually pursued and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Exercise and Sport Science. Greg went on to pursue a Master of Science in Exercise Science and Health Promotion (Performance Enhancement and Injury Prevention) while he was, ironically enough, working in the pharmaceutical industry. It was his desire to play a more “hands-on” role in improving people’s lives, as well as his love of fitness and sport performance training that led him to pursue a career in the fitness/sport performance field.

Greg enjoys attending sporting events, reading, traveling, watching movies/TV, and working out/training. As an adult, he has participated in weightlifting meets and has also played baseball and ice hockey. Greg is the proud owner of a beautiful beagle girl, Frannie Savannah.

2 Truths and 1 Lie about Greg:

1. Greg worked construction for a year in the Southern California desert east of San Diego.
2. Greg once did a tandem skydive from 10,500 feet over Oceanside, California.
3. Greg was a teammate of Derek Jeter when they both played professional baseball for the Class A Greensboro Hornets of the South Atlantic League.
