How often have you thought to yourself, “I really need to go workout.”? Now, how many times have you said, “I could really use a personal trainer.”? And finally, the myth we’re going to be discussing today, how many times have you said, “I should probably get in shape before I ask that personal trainer to get me into shape.”? That last one sounds just a little bit ridiculous right? That’s because it’s a myth. You don’t need to get in shape before you begin personal training, and here’s why:

1) Personal Trainers are experts in their field

At EMPOWER, our entire staff has achieved at least a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, with many of us continuing on to get a Master’s in the same field; we are all nationally certified in at least one accredited organization, and we all have experience working with clients of every shape, size, age, ability, athletic ability, etc. We’re experts. We know how to get you in shape and we know how to teach you to get yourself in shape. So why not begin exercising with access to an immense amount of knowledge from people who can cater to your specific goals and progress you to the point where you can maintain your fitness level?

2) Personal Trainers are motivators

The hardest part getting into shape, or getting back into shape, is finding the will power to get back in the groove of things. If someone hasn’t been working out for 6 months and then suddenly wants to work out again, what happens when said person gets to the gym and realizes they’re in worse shape than they originally thought? There’s no motivation to continue. Exercise is hard. It’s supposed to be hard. But, if you can’t get over that one hurdle and push yourself to get back into shape, how do you keep going? That’s where a personal trainer comes in. We’re there to motivate you to grind through the workout and improve your fitness level. Why go through an arduous process alone when you can have a friend that will not only encourage you, but guide you as well?

3) Personal Trainers are guides

Fitness isn’t one decision; it’s a process of decisions day-in and day-out until you reach the goal you’ve been working towards…and then you make a new goal and the process starts all over again! But, it’s all about how you start. If you begin by going all out, balls to the wall, hardcore until you can’t stand anymore and the next day you can’t actually move, then you started poorly. There’s a misconception going around that a good workout is constituted by how exhausted you are at the end. That’s a terrible foundation for a workout. But, if that’s all you have to base your first workout off of, then that’s most likely where you’ll begin as well. That’s where we come in again. We’re here to guide you along that process, and start you off with workouts that are designed to test your limits in a safe and fun environment. Yes, you should be tired after a workout, but if you’re so fatigued that it takes you a week to recover, then you’ll never want to workout again.

Next time you begin to say you need to get in shape before you get a personal trainer, just think of these three things first. We’re here to help you get in shape; it’s our job! With that, I officially declare this myth: BUSTED! See you next time on EMPOWER Blog: Mythbusters edition!
