How to Choose a Personal Trainer

15 Years and Counting

Empower Personalized Fitness opened our doors in Durham back in 2005. It’s super exciting that our community is now in our 15 years!

When we started this back in 2005, our goal was to be different than any other fitness solution out there. We have achieved that goal by offering personalized fitness services to hundreds upon hundreds of clients in those 15 years. We want to help you focus on the most important things to consider when looking to hire a personal trainer.

Searching By the Numbers

  1. Certifications – The first thing that we  highly recommend is that you make sure the trainer is certified through an accredited organization. Personal training is a field that’s not regulated by a licenser process, like physical therapy, or some other allied health professions. Only consider those who are certified by an organization that is accredited nationally. Learn more about Personal Training Certifications HERE
  2. Proper Programming – The second thing you want is somebody who is going to program a workout that is specific to you. Be sure that that program has elements of strength training, flexibility training, cardiovascular training, functional training and also builds in proper rest and recovery.
We see so many trainers out there in “go hard or go home mentality“. Everything is high intensity, but that is not a well thought out or physiologically sound exercise program. Find someone that can give you more than just a run of the mill exercises for a predictable number of reps. You need somebody who’s going to do more than just count to 15. Trainers can count to 15 in their sleep.

It’s also a good idea to look at what their clients are saying about them. When you’re about to buy something or invest in something, you do your research.  Shopping for a trainer is no different. If you’re looking at a personal training studio or gym, check online reviews to find out what other people’s experience has been at that place.

  3. Motivator – Finally, you want someone who’s going to motivate and empower you to reach the life that you want to live outside of wherever you’re exercising. The fitness training you are doing should line up with the real-life goals that you have, whatever they may be. If you want to travel, or run marathons, or just get on the floor and play with your kids, you want to find someone who can get you to the level of fitness you want to enhance your life.
