Measuring beyond the scale

Tired of that number on the scale not changing despite all your hard work?

Our bodies are constantly changing, especially when we begin or change a workout routine. The number on the scale is deceiving and not always a good indicator of overall health and well-being.

Empower offers body composition testing services that accurately measures your lean muscle mass (muscles, bones, organs) and body fat percentage. The test is called BOD POD; a quick, convenient and accurate way to measure body composition.

BodPod Client Colby

I have been working out with Blaine at Empower for about six months now with the goal of losing weight. To help me set goals and track progress I signed up to do the BOD POD testing.  I have completed 2 BOD POD tests (a pre-test and follow-up test) with Amanda. It has helped both my trainer Blaine and me track my progress and allowed me to set realistic short and long term goals. The information the BOD POD provided has also really helped me stay motivated. My first follow up test was evidence that all my hard work was paying off!

How it works

BOD POD uses air displacement technology, which is considered the Gold Standard of body composition measurement. It is safe, comfortable and non-invasive. You simply sit comfortably inside the BOD POD and breathe normally for the duration of the test.

Other benefits of a BOD POD Body Composition Test:

  1. Monitor for obesity, a risk factor for major diseases, like stroke and diabetes
  2. Assist you to lose or gain weight safely
  3. FINE TUNE athletic performance

Accuracy of the BOD POD

Research studies have established the great accuracy, safety and speed of the BOD POD. The BOD POD body composition test is accurate within 1% body fat for adults and children. Other methods such as BMI, skinfold calipers, bioelectric impedance, hydrostatic (underwater) weighing and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry, are statistically much less accurate or inconvenient.

Time it takes

The test itself only takes about 3 minutes. After your test you will review your results and receive a 30 minute consultation with a professional Empower Personal Trainer.

Test preparation

Clients should not work-out, eat, or drink for at least 1 hour prior to testing. The BOD POD measures by volume, so ideal attire is form fitting: unpadded spandex shorts and sports-bra for women, a swimsuit, or an equivalent.

Results you receive

The BOD POD test can be used to detect even small changes in body composition. It will help you set health related goals, and provide the encouragement and motivation you need to reach those goals.

This test also determines your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), which is an estimation of how many calories your body burns at rest throughout the day  – very useful information for anyone who is trying to lose weight!

Q & A

Q: How do I lose excess body fat?

The most effective way is to combine exercise with healthy dietary choices.

Q: How do I increase lean muscle mass?

The best method is through resistance training. Typically when you lose fat you also lose muscle unless you incorporate resistance training. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn throughout the day.

Q: What do the results of a Bod Pod test look like?

Here is an example of a results chart you might get from a Bod Pod test:

  Baseline Today Changes
  9/11/2015 12/11/2015
Bodyweight 150 lb 135 lb -15 lb
% Bodyfat 25% 15% -10%
Fat Mass 37.5 20.3 -17.3
% Lean 75 85 +10
Lean Mass 112.5 114.8 +2.3

Q: Where is the Body Composition test conducted?

Testing is performed at Duke’s Sports Science Institute off Erwin Rd. by Duke Center for Living, the only location for this type of test within 100 miles!
